Last night marked the 66th Emmy Awards – and with lots of popular TV series proving worthy winners, we thought we’d look at the shows that are influencing what we are wearing…
Orange is the New Black
The TV series made orange so cool, that one prison in Michigan decided to ditch their luminous jumpsuits and replaced them with black-and-white striped jumpsuits.
A sheriff at the Saginaw County Jail commented: “It’s because as you see shows on television, like Orange Is The New Black, some people think it’s cool to look like an inmate of the Saginaw County Jail with wearing all-orange jumpsuits out at the mall or in public.
“It’s a concern because we do have our inmates out sometimes doing work in the public, and I don’t want anyone to confuse them or have them walk away.
“We decided that the black-and-white stripes would be the best way to go because it signifies ‘jail inmate,’ and I don’t see people out there wanting to wear black-and-white stripes.”
Breaking Bad
Big winners at the Emmy’s last night, hit show Breaking Bad has also seen a surge in popularity in the hat market. The signature pork pie hat as worn by Bryan Cranston’s Walter White has proved extremely popular with fans. However, this Heisenburg hat has a hefty price tag of $150.
Game of Thrones
Printed t-shirts bearing slogans or characters from shows such as Game of Thrones are becoming increasingly popular, however it is the medieval fashion from this cult TV series that has become in demand. From high end fashion houses to small jewellery businesses, everyone wants to cash in on the layered fur, house sigils and intricate embroidery of the show.
